Organize Your Writing

Oftentimes writing can be ineffective just because it's not well organized. The ideas may be sound, the tone and style may be appropriate; but if it's not well organized, it can fall flat. Your goal as a writer is, first and foremost, to communicate with readers. So it makes sense to organize your writing in the most logical, reader-friendly order. Remember that when you write, readers are embarking on a journey with you and they look to you for clear guidance along the way. Think about the order in which you present information. Is it the most effective order for reader understanding? Are you providing the appropriate background information about your ideas before you present them to readers? Are you building up to major points or climaxes by building reader interest and intrigue? Are you transitioning smoothly from idea to idea and passage to passage? Does your discussion unfold in a logical way so that readers can clearly follow your progression of thought? Have you devoted majority space to your major ideas and minority space to your minor ideas? Do all of your ideas bear a clear relationship to each other?
Well organized writing that attends to these details weaves a thread of continuity that readers can easily follow and results in a cohesiveness that makes good writing and good sense.
