Word Power

The power of words is what keeps writers writing and readers reading. The written word is held to a higher standard than the spoken word. When writing, we are expected to be honest, accurate and thorough. There is no leeway for vagueness, confusion or dishonesty. Spoken words disappear as soon as they're uttered, but written words are permanent and leave a lasting impression. As such, they are more vigorously scrutinized and must meet criteria of logic, transition and clarity. In meeting these criteria, written words achieve significant power. They have the power to move readers emotionally in deeply cathartic and surprising ways. As such, they have the power to achieve profound change in readers. Writers often underestimate the power of their writing. With a single story, essay or poem, a writer can turn a reader's life around, create lasting change, and provide hope. This is no small feat and writers who understand the power of words are able to infuse that power into their writing in ways that other writers can't. Always be aware of the impact your writing has on others and use that awareness to not only entertain and inform readers, but to inspire, lead and support them. To the extent you can do that, your writing efforts, however small, can have huge consequences.
